Tyke Productions is excited to announce that Poly Styrene: I AM A CLICHE has received two prestigious award nominations, including a Scottish BAFTA nomination for Best Documentary and a Grierson Award nomination for Best Music Documentary. 'Poly Styrene: I AM A CLICHE' delves into the captivating tale of the first woman of color in the UK to lead a thriving rock band, featuring original music by Marina Elderton. Poly Styrene revolutionized the music scene by bringing a fresh voice of rebellion, using her unique vocals to address themes of identity, consumerism, and postmodernism prevalent in late 1970s Britain with remarkable foresight. Through her role as the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, the Anglo-Somali punk artist also played a pivotal role in inspiring the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements.
Featuring unseen archive material and rare diary entries narrated by Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga, this documentary follows Celeste as she examines her mother’s unopened artistic archive and traverses three continents to better understand Poly the icon and Poly the mother.
